// Competitive Comparison

OSSeva vs. Amazon ElastiCache Extended Support

ElastiCache moved Redis OSS 4 and 5 into paid Extended Support on 1 February 2026, and Redis OSS 6 follows on 1 February 2027. For caches that stay on ElastiCache, Extended Support or an upgrade to ElastiCache for Valkey is the simple route. OSSeva patches Redis 6.2, 7.0 and 7.2 and Valkey that you run yourself.

Where OSSeva is stronger

  • ✓Self-managed Redis and Valkey on EC2, Kubernetes, another cloud or on premises, where ElastiCache Extended Support does not apply
  • ✓Patched builds of Redis 6.2, 7.0 and 7.2 under the original BSD licence, plus Valkey 7.2 and 8.x
  • ✓Docker images, apt and yum packages, and Bitnami-compatible images for existing Helm charts
  • ✓ACL, persistence and TLS configuration audits, and 24/7 operations with a 15-minute P1 response on the Operate tier

Where Amazon ElastiCache Extended Support is stronger

  • →Nothing to migrate: caches on Redis OSS 4, 5 and, from February 2027, 6 are enrolled automatically
  • →Covers Redis OSS 4 and 5, which OSSeva does not ship builds for
  • →Patches delivered inside the managed service, with support cases under the standard ElastiCache service level agreement
  • →An upgrade path to ElastiCache for Valkey within the same service

Why teams choose OSSeva

For Redis and Valkey you run yourself

ElastiCache Extended Support covers caches on ElastiCache and nothing else. Redis on EC2 instances, in Kubernetes from Bitnami charts, in another cloud or on premises gets nothing from it. OSSeva backports security fixes into Redis 6.2, 7.0 and 7.2, the BSD-licensed lines, and supports Valkey 7.2 and 8.x, with priority on the memory-safety bugs that recur in a server written in C.

A bill that does not follow node size

ElastiCache Extended Support is charged as a premium on the on-demand price of each node, the premium rises in the third year, and reserved node discounts do not reduce it. OSSeva for Redis is priced per instance cluster, not per node or per GB of memory, so a larger cache does not raise the support bill.

Operations and audits, not only patches

The Assure tier reviews ACLs, authentication, persistence and TLS configuration and supplies SOC 2 and PCI DSS attestation material. The Operate tier adds 24/7 monitoring of memory, eviction and replication, a 15-minute P1 response and a named senior Redis engineer. When you are ready to move from Redis to Valkey, the same team plans it.

Why teams choose Amazon ElastiCache Extended Support

No migration and no new vendor

If your caches already run on ElastiCache, Extended Support keeps them running without any change, and the charge stops when you upgrade. Moving a cache off ElastiCache to save on support is rarely worth it on its own, and an in-service upgrade to ElastiCache for Valkey is usually the cleaner exit.

The oldest versions are covered

Redis OSS 4 and 5 left community support in 2020 and 2022. ElastiCache Extended Support patches the final patch versions, 4.0.10 and 5.0.6, until 31 January 2029. OSSeva does not ship builds for Redis 4 or 5, so for those versions on ElastiCache, AWS is the option.

Fixes applied inside the managed service

Extended Support provides security updates for critical and high CVEs, fixes for critical issues and support cases within the standard ElastiCache service level agreement, for up to three years after standard support ends. There is nothing to build, host or distribute.

Which is right for your situation?

Choose OSSeva when…

Your Redis 6.2, 7.0 or 7.2 or Valkey runs outside ElastiCache, on EC2, Kubernetes, another cloud or on premises, and you need patched builds, configuration audits or 24/7 operations under one subscription.

Consider Amazon ElastiCache Extended Support when…

Your caches run on ElastiCache and will stay there, especially on Redis OSS 4 or 5, or you would rather upgrade in place to ElastiCache for Valkey. That is most ElastiCache customers.

ElastiCache Extended Support covers Redis OSS 4, 5 and, from February 2027, 6 on ElastiCache, for up to three years past standard support. OSSeva covers self-managed Redis 6.2, 7.0 and 7.2 and Valkey 7.2 and 8.x.

Frequently asked questions

Does ElastiCache have Extended Support?

Yes. ElastiCache Extended Support lets you keep running a Redis OSS major version past the end of standard support for an additional charge. Redis OSS 4 and 5 left standard support on 31 January 2026 and are covered to 31 January 2029. Redis OSS 6 leaves standard support on 31 January 2027 and is covered to 31 January 2030.

What happens to Redis OSS 6 on ElastiCache in February 2027?

Caches still on Redis OSS 6 after 31 January 2027 move into Extended Support automatically, and charges start on 1 February 2027. AWS says it notifies customers before the pricing start date. Upgrading to a version in standard support, or to ElastiCache for Valkey, stops the charge.

How is ElastiCache Extended Support priced?

As a premium on the on-demand price of each node: one premium for years 1 and 2 and a higher one for year 3. Reserved node discounts do not apply to the Extended Support charge. We do not reproduce AWS's prices; the ElastiCache pricing page has them.

What happens when ElastiCache Extended Support ends?

ElastiCache attempts to upgrade the engine to a version in standard support. For Redis OSS 4 and 5 that is the latest version of Valkey after 31 January 2029. If the upgrade fails, AWS reserves the right to delete the cache after preserving its data.

Can OSSeva patch our ElastiCache clusters?

No. ElastiCache runs engine builds that only AWS can change. OSSeva is for Redis and Valkey you operate yourself. If your caches stay on ElastiCache, Extended Support or an upgrade to ElastiCache for Valkey is the right path.

Which Redis and Valkey versions does OSSeva cover?

Redis 6.2, 7.0 and 7.2, the BSD-licensed lines, and Valkey 7.2 and 8.x. Builds support standalone, Sentinel and Cluster modes. Redis 4 and 5 are not covered.
