Apache ZooKeeper end of life dates

Apache ZooKeeper 3.9 is the newest release line, at 3.9.6 (14 Sept 2026). 2 lines are still supported upstream: 3.9 and 3.8. 4 lines have reached end of life, most recently 3.7 on 2 Feb 2024. OSSeva ships patched builds for end-of-life Apache ZooKeeper 3.7, 3.6, 3.5 and 3.4.

The Apache ZooKeeper community supports two release branches at a time, a current release and a stable release. When a new minor version ships, the previous stable branch is expected to be decommissioned within about six months, getting only security and critical fixes in that window and no community patches once end of life is announced.

Running an end-of-life Apache ZooKeeper version?

OSSeva keeps end-of-life Apache ZooKeeper patched with signed builds and backported CVE fixes, documents it for your auditor, and can run it for you, so the upgrade happens on your schedule rather than the project’s.

Apache ZooKeeper extended support

Apache ZooKeeper end of life: common questions

Which ZooKeeper versions are supported?

Two at a time: the current release and the latest stable release, both named on the ZooKeeper releases page. Every other line is unsupported, and after end of life is announced the community ships no further patches for it. The table above shows which lines hold those two slots today and when older lines ended.

Is ZooKeeper 3.7 end of life?

Yes. The ZooKeeper releases page marks 3.7.2, the last 3.7 release, as end of life since 2 February 2024. The community has shipped no fixes for 3.7 since then, so security issues found later stay unpatched upstream for that line. Upgrading means moving to the current or the stable branch.

Does Kafka still need ZooKeeper?

Not from Kafka 4.0. Kafka's upgrade notes state that 4.0 supports only KRaft mode and that ZooKeeper mode has been removed, so Kafka 4.x clusters run without ZooKeeper. Kafka 3.x clusters in ZooKeeper mode have to migrate to KRaft before their brokers can upgrade to 4.0, which removes one common reason to keep ZooKeeper.

What is the latest Apache ZooKeeper version?

3.9.6, released 14 Sept 2026, on the 3.9 line. Other supported lines: 3.8.

Which Apache ZooKeeper versions are still supported?

3.9 and 3.8. Every other line has reached end of life, per the dates in the table above.

Can I get security patches for an end-of-life Apache ZooKeeper version?

Yes. OSSeva ships signed builds with backported CVE fixes for Apache ZooKeeper 3.7, 3.6, 3.5 and 3.4 after upstream support ends, on the Patch, Assure and Operate tiers, so you can stay on the version you run while you plan the upgrade.
