OSSeva vs. Erlang Solutions

Erlang Solutions is an Erlang/OTP and Elixir consultancy, and its RabbitMQ team now works independently as Seventh State. OSSeva ships patched builds of RabbitMQ 3.8 to 4.x and the Erlang/OTP releases underneath them, and can run the clusters for you 24/7.

Where OSSeva is stronger

  • ✓Patched, signed builds of RabbitMQ 3.8 to 3.13 and 4.x, so a cluster you cannot upgrade yet still receives security fixes
  • ✓Patched Erlang/OTP 24, 25 and 26 past their community end of life, shipped as tested pairs with the broker
  • ✓24/7 managed operations on the Operate tier, with a 15-minute P1 response and a named engineer
  • ✓One contract that also covers Kafka, ZooKeeper, PostgreSQL, Redis and the rest of the data layer

Where Erlang Solutions is stronger

  • →Deep Erlang and Elixir engineering, including custom development and two-week code and architecture reviews
  • →SAFE, a security audit of your own Erlang code, and WombatOAM, its monitoring tool for systems on the BEAM
  • →Support plans for MongooseIM and EMQX as well as Erlang, Elixir and RabbitMQ
  • →Training, from public courses to bespoke corporate courses taught by engineers who still work on client projects

Why teams choose OSSeva

Fixes for the versions you are stuck on

Advice on how to upgrade does not close a CVE on a cluster that cannot move this quarter. OSSeva backports security fixes into RabbitMQ 3.8 to 3.13 and 4.x and ships signed builds, so a cluster held on 3.x by mirrored classic queues or a pinned Erlang release keeps passing scans while the upgrade is planned. Erlang Solutions' support and RabbitMQ pages describe consultancy, troubleshooting and tested upgrades, and do not list patched builds for releases the community has stopped fixing.

The runtime patched with the broker

Each RabbitMQ release runs on a narrow band of Erlang/OTP releases, and OTP 24, 25 and 26 have all left community support. OSSeva patches those OTP releases, including the TLS, SSH, public_key and crypto applications, and tests each one against the broker version it runs under. For RabbitMQ customers the Erlang/OTP coverage is included at no additional cost.

A team that runs the clusters, not only a ticket queue

On the Operate tier OSSeva engineers monitor your RabbitMQ and Erlang clusters 24/7 on your own infrastructure, respond to P1 incidents within 15 minutes, and carry out rolling OTP upgrades when you are ready. Erlang Solutions' plans are built around consultative hours, trouble tickets and resolution plans, and its RabbitMQ support now sits with Seventh State.

Why teams choose Erlang Solutions

Erlang engineering depth

Erlang Solutions was founded by Francesco Cesarini and counts Robert Virding, one of the creators of Erlang, on its team. It builds and reviews Erlang and Elixir systems: consulting, development of new features, migrations to Erlang, and two-week code and architecture reviews that end in a written report. If the problem is your own BEAM application rather than the broker, that is its core business and not OSSeva's.

Tools and audits for your own code

SAFE, its Security Audit for Erlang, investigates your Erlang code for vulnerabilities. WombatOAM is its monitoring and maintenance tool for systems on the BEAM. OSSeva patches the runtime and the broker; it does not audit application code or sell a monitoring product.

Breadth across the BEAM ecosystem

Erlang Solutions offers support packages for Erlang, Elixir, RabbitMQ, MongooseIM and EMQX, in Basic, Business, Enterprise and Extended plans, and says the creators of RabbitMQ and Elixir refer users to it for support. Its RabbitMQ specialists now trade as Seventh State and offer consultancy, health checks, 24/7 support, troubleshooting, disaster recovery and training.

Which is right for your situation?

Choose OSSeva when…

Your RabbitMQ clusters run 3.x or an early 4.x series on an Erlang/OTP release that has left community support, and you need patched, signed builds now, or you want one team to run RabbitMQ, Erlang and the rest of your data layer 24/7 on your infrastructure.

Talk to an engineer

Consider Erlang Solutions when…

Your main need is Erlang or Elixir engineering on your own applications, a security audit of your Erlang code, WombatOAM, or support for MongooseIM or EMQX. For RabbitMQ consulting, Erlang Solutions now points to Seventh State.

Erlang Solutions supports Erlang, Elixir, RabbitMQ, MongooseIM and EMQX, and its RabbitMQ specialists now work as Seventh State. OSSeva covers RabbitMQ 3.8 to 4.x and Erlang/OTP 24 to 28 with patched builds, alongside Kafka, ZooKeeper, PostgreSQL, Redis and other data infrastructure.

Frequently asked questions

Does Erlang Solutions still do RabbitMQ consulting?

Its RabbitMQ page says the RabbitMQ team was recently rebranded as Seventh State, formed from the specialists who built and delivered RabbitMQ services within Erlang Solutions, and that Seventh State continues that work independently. The consultancy, health check, 24/7 support, troubleshooting, disaster recovery and training links on that page go to Seventh State. Erlang Solutions' support plans page still lists RabbitMQ among the technologies it supports.

Does Erlang Solutions patch end-of-life RabbitMQ or Erlang/OTP versions?

Its pages do not list patched builds for releases the community no longer fixes. The Extended support plan covers testing, ongoing support and tested upgrades as new versions are released, and moving an existing Erlang/OTP environment to a new platform. If you need security fixes on a version you cannot leave yet, ask for that in writing. OSSeva ships patched RabbitMQ 3.8 to 4.x and Erlang/OTP 24, 25 and 26 today.

What support plans does Erlang Solutions offer?

Four: Basic, aimed at pre-funded start-ups and non-essential systems, with one user account and limited consultative hours; Business, with two accounts and a resolution plan within three working days if an issue is not fixed at first contact; Enterprise, with five accounts, unlimited consultative hours and tickets, and a resolution plan within one working day; and Extended, for moving an Erlang/OTP environment to a new platform with tested upgrades. It says it tailors packages to each customer.

Can we use Erlang Solutions and OSSeva together?

Yes. A common split keeps a consultancy on your own Erlang or Elixir code and uses OSSeva for patched RabbitMQ and Erlang/OTP builds and for running the brokers. OSSeva's patched OTP builds also cover Elixir applications that run on them.

Which RabbitMQ and Erlang/OTP versions does OSSeva cover?

RabbitMQ 3.8 to 3.13 and the 4.x series, and Erlang/OTP 24 to 28, with OTP 24, 25 and 26 patched past their community end of life. Broker and runtime ship as tested pairs, delivered through Helm, OCI images or OS packages.

How does pricing compare?

We do not publish or estimate other vendors' prices, and Erlang Solutions tailors its packages. OSSeva prices RabbitMQ per cluster, and Erlang/OTP coverage is included for RabbitMQ customers. Ask both for a quote against the same list of clusters and versions.
