Hortonworks HDP 3.1 end of life
Hortonworks Data Platform 3.1 reached end of support in December 2021 under Cloudera's lifecycle policy, and limited support for eligible customers ended on 30 June 2022. HDP 3.1.5 was the final release. It ships Hadoop 3.1.1, HBase 2.1.6, Hive 3.1.0 and ZooKeeper 3.4.6, and the ZooKeeper 3.4 line itself has been end of life since June 2020.

What actually stops on December 2021
- Cloudera maintenance releases and fixes for HDP 3.1. HDP 3.1.5 was the last release.
- Security fixes for the components HDP 3.1.5 packages, including Hadoop 3.1.1, HBase 2.1.6, Hive 3.1.0, Kafka 2.0.0, Storm 1.2.1, Druid 0.12.1 and ZooKeeper 3.4.6.
- Fixes for ZooKeeper advisories published after 2021. The Apache 3.4 line has no fix for CVE-2023-44981, published in October 2023.
What actually breaks in the upgrade
The management layer changes too
HDP 3.1.5 clusters are run by Apache Ambari 2.7.5. Cloudera on premises is run by Cloudera Manager. The upgrade replaces the tooling that deploys configuration and restarts services, as well as every component version.
Storm and Druid have no place in the target
The runtime component list for Cloudera on premises 7.1.9 has no Storm and no Druid. HDP clusters running either need a separate destination for those workloads before the platform move.
ZooKeeper jumps four minor lines
HDP 3.1.5 ships ZooKeeper 3.4.6. Cloudera on premises 7.1.9 ships a 3.8.1 build and 7.3.2 a 3.8.5 build. Every client of the ensemble crosses from 3.4 to 3.8 at once, including applications that registered with it from outside the Hadoop stack.
Your options, costed honestly
Including the ones that do not involve buying anything from us.
| Option | What it is | Effort | Cost | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade to Cloudera on premises | Cloudera's current platform, managed by Cloudera Manager. | Quarters | Cloudera subscription plus migration effort | The vendor path. Plan Storm and Druid separately. |
| Move to upstream Apache releases | Current Apache Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Storm and ZooKeeper, run by your own tooling. | Quarters to years | Engineering time | Keeps every workload, including Storm, on supported upstream lines. |
| OSSeva extended support on HDP 3.1 | Patched builds for the HDP 3.1 components and the ZooKeeper ensemble under them. | Days | Subscription | Keeps the cluster patched and auditable while the platform decision is made. |
What OSSeva does for Hortonworks HDP 3.1
OSSeva patches this line
OSSeva patches HDP 3.1 now. Signed builds cover the Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Kafka and Storm components HDP 3.1.5 ships and the ZooKeeper 3.4 ensemble under them, on the Patch, Assure and Operate tiers, with VEX attestation for auditors.
Apache Hadoop extended supportWhat your auditor will say
Every system component that stores or processes cardholder data needs its applicable security patches. On a data platform that includes the ZooKeeper ensemble the cluster depends on, not only the query engines people see.
Auditors ask for evidence that production systems receive security fixes. A platform past its end of support fails that test unless another supplier ships the fixes and can show which CVEs they close.
Hortonworks HDP 3.1: common questions
When did HDP 3.1 reach end of support?
In December 2021, under Cloudera's support lifecycle policy. HDP 3.0 ended in July 2021 and HDP 2.6 in December 2020. Limited support for eligible HDP 3.1 customers ran from 1 January to 30 June 2022.
Which ZooKeeper version does HDP 3.1 ship?
ZooKeeper 3.4.6, in both HDP 3.1.0 and 3.1.5. The Apache 3.4 line reached end of life on 1 June 2020.
What replaced HDP?
Cloudera on premises, formerly CDP Private Cloud Base. Release 7.1.9 is supported until October 2028 and 7.3.2 until March 2032.
Can HDP 3.1 stay patched without a platform upgrade?
Yes. OSSeva ships patched builds for the HDP 3.1 components and the ZooKeeper under them, so the cluster stays on HDP while the move is planned.
