Is MySQL Enterprise Edition Free? MySQL Licensing and Support Cost Explained

Randall McClure9 min read

The short answer

No, MySQL Enterprise Edition is not free. Oracle sells it as an annual subscription, counted per server, with Oracle Premier Support included. MySQL Community Edition is free to download and use under the GPL. Enterprise Edition adds commercial components such as Enterprise Backup, the thread pool, transparent data encryption, audit, firewall and masking, together with 24x7 Oracle support. Whether you need it depends on whether you use those components, and whether you want your support contract with Oracle.

What MySQL Community Edition includes

Oracle describes Community Edition as "the freely downloadable version" of MySQL, available under the GPL. It is the full database server, not a cut-down trial. It includes InnoDB, replication, Group Replication with automatic failover, InnoDB Cluster, MySQL Router, MySQL Shell, the document store and Workbench. Support comes from the community, unless you buy a support contract from someone.

What Enterprise Edition adds

Oracle's Enterprise Edition page lists these commercial components on top of the server:

  • MySQL Enterprise Backup for online hot backups, full, incremental and partial, with point-in-time recovery and compression.
  • Thread Pool for handling large numbers of client connections.
  • JavaScript stored programs.
  • Enterprise Authentication with PAM and Windows Active Directory.
  • Transparent data encryption, Enterprise Encryption, Masking and Dynamic Data Masking.
  • Enterprise Firewall against attacks such as SQL injection, and Enterprise Audit for policy-based activity logging.
  • 24x7 support from Oracle's MySQL support engineers.

Oracle also sells Standard Edition and Cluster Carrier Grade Edition. Its edition comparison says Oracle Premier Support for MySQL is included in all annual subscriptions, so Standard Edition is the way to buy Oracle support without the Enterprise components.

How MySQL is licensed

Oracle offers the MySQL server and client libraries under two licences: the GPL and a commercial licence. Using Community Edition inside your own company, or behind your own web application, is covered by the GPL at no cost. The commercial licence exists mainly for OEMs, ISVs and resellers who distribute MySQL with their own closed-source software and do not want that software to fall under the GPL. If you ship MySQL inside a product, read Oracle's OEM licensing page and take legal advice. If you only run it, the GPL question rarely applies.

How Oracle prices MySQL Enterprise Edition

Oracle's MySQL price list sells Standard, Enterprise and Cluster Carrier Grade Edition as annual subscriptions with the metric "Server", in two classes: servers with one to four sockets, and servers with five or more. The price list defines a server as "the computer on which the programs are installed". You can buy through the Oracle Store, Oracle sales or channel partners, and Oracle states that "Only Oracle provides commercially-licensed MySQL Enterprise Edition".

Two practical points follow from a per-server model. Every server running Enterprise Edition needs a subscription, replicas included, so the bill grows with the number of servers rather than the number of databases or clusters. And how virtual machines and containers count against the definition of a server is a contract question to settle with Oracle before you deploy.

Oracle offers a trial download through Oracle eDelivery and a developer download through OTN. Check the licence terms on each before using them beyond evaluation.

What drives MySQL support cost

"MySQL support cost" covers several different bills, depending on where MySQL runs:

  • Oracle subscriptions for self-managed servers, counted per server by socket class.
  • Managed cloud services such as Amazon RDS, Azure Database for MySQL and Cloud SQL, billed for instances, with paid extended support for versions past standard support. RDS ended standard support for MySQL 8.0 on 31 July 2026; Azure keeps 8.0 in standard support until 31 January 2027.
  • Third-party support for Community servers, from companies such as Percona, OpenLogic and OSSeva, each with its own pricing model.
  • Your own team's time on patching, upgrades and incidents, which is the cost most often left out.

Because the units differ, compare them against one list of your servers, clusters and versions. The database support cost calculator models your own estate under each pricing model.

MySQL support lifecycle and end of life

Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy gives each MySQL LTS release five years of Premier Support and three of Extended Support. After that comes Sustaining Support, which Oracle says does not include new updates, fixes, security alerts or critical patch updates. Current dates:

ReleasePremier Support endsExtended Support ends
MySQL 5.7October 2020October 2023
MySQL 8.0April 2025April 2026
MySQL 8.4 LTSApril 2029April 2032
MySQL 9.7 LTSApril 2031April 2034

MySQL 8.0's final release was 8.0.46 on 21 April 2026. An Enterprise subscription does not bring new 8.0 fixes; it gives you the right to upgrade to 8.4 or 9.7. Our MySQL 8.0 end of life guide and 8.0 to 8.4 upgrade guide cover the move.

Support options for MySQL Community Edition

If you run Community Edition and want a support contract without buying Enterprise Edition, these are the main routes:

ProviderWhat it coversMySQL 8.0 after end of lifePricing model
Oracle Standard Edition subscriptionOracle Premier Support, without the Enterprise componentsSustaining Support only, with no new fixesAnnual subscription per server, by socket class
Percona24x7 support for MySQL and Percona Server for MySQLPaid post-EOL support for Percona Server for MySQL 8.0, up to three yearsQuoted by sales
OpenLogicMySQL 5.7 and 8.0 long-term support, with a 24x7 premium tierThrough at least September 2028Quoted by the vendor
Cloud providersTheir own managed MySQLPaid extended support on their services onlyInstance charges plus extended support charges
OSSevaCommunity MySQL 5.7 to 9.7 and MariaDB, on your own serversPatched, signed 8.0 Community buildsPriced per cluster

When you compare them, ask each one three things: which exact versions it covers, whether it ships patched builds or advice only, and what unit the price counts. Our Percona alternatives post covers the wider field.

Do you need Enterprise Edition for high availability?

No. Group Replication, InnoDB Cluster and MySQL Router are part of Community Edition, so automatic failover does not need an Enterprise subscription. What Enterprise adds for operations is Enterprise Backup for hot backups of InnoDB, the thread pool for very high connection counts, and Oracle's monitoring and telemetry tooling. Teams that need online backups on Community Edition often use Percona XtraBackup instead.

Open source options for Enterprise features

Some Enterprise-only capabilities have open source counterparts. Percona Server for MySQL includes PAM authentication, data masking, a Vault keyring component and a thread pool, and Percona XtraBackup takes online, non-blocking backups. MariaDB, made by MySQL's original developers and licensed under GPLv2, is another route, though it has diverged from MySQL and is a migration, not a drop-in swap for every workload. Our MariaDB vs MySQL comparison covers the differences.

When Enterprise Edition is the better fit

  • You depend on Enterprise-only components such as Enterprise Firewall, Enterprise TDE with a key vault, or Enterprise Audit, and want them supported by the vendor that writes them.
  • You distribute MySQL inside a closed-source product and need Oracle's commercial licence anyway.
  • Your organisation already buys from Oracle and wants MySQL on the same agreement.
  • Your auditors or customers ask for specific Enterprise security components by name, such as the firewall or audit plugin, and a community equivalent would need its own approval.

If none of those apply, Community Edition with a support contract usually covers what a team needs. The database is the same server either way; what you are choosing is the extra components and who answers the phone.

Where OSSeva fits

OSSeva for MySQL supports the Community Edition servers you already run, without an Oracle contract and without a migration. OSSeva Patch ships signed, patched Community builds for 5.7 and 8.0 after Oracle's end of life, on the same major version and data directory. OSSeva Assure adds an upgrade plan to 8.4 and then 9.7, an authentication review for accounts that 8.4 will lock out, a replication topology review and compliance evidence. OSSeva Operate patches Critical CVEs (CVSS ≥ 9.0) within 48 hours and High within 7 days, and adds 24/7 monitoring and a 15-minute P1 response. MariaDB sits on the same contract. Pricing is per cluster, so replicas do not reprice it; book a discovery call for a quote. If you rely on Enterprise-only components, we tell you plainly where Enterprise Edition is the better fit. Frequently asked questions

Is MySQL Enterprise Edition free?

No. Enterprise Edition is a commercial product sold only by Oracle, as an annual subscription counted per server. MySQL Community Edition is the free version, under the GPL.

Is MySQL free for commercial use?

Yes, Community Edition is free to run in production, including for commercial applications, under the GPL. A commercial licence matters mainly when you distribute MySQL inside closed-source software you sell.

What is the difference between MySQL Enterprise and Community?

Both share the same server, InnoDB and replication features. Enterprise adds Oracle's commercial components, such as Enterprise Backup, the thread pool, TDE, audit, firewall and masking, plus 24x7 Oracle support. Community is free and supported by the community or by a third-party contract.

How much does MySQL support cost?

It depends on the model. Oracle charges annual subscriptions per server by socket class; cloud services bill instances plus extended support for older versions; third-party vendors price in their own units, and OSSeva prices per cluster. Model your own estate in the support cost calculator.

Does Oracle offer support for MySQL Community Edition?

Oracle sells support as part of its MySQL subscriptions. Standard Edition includes Oracle Premier Support without the Enterprise components. Third-party vendors also support Community servers directly.

Do I need MySQL Enterprise Edition for replication or failover?

No. Replication, Group Replication with automatic failover, InnoDB Cluster and MySQL Router all ship in the free Community Edition.

Is there a free trial of MySQL Enterprise Edition?

Oracle offers a trial download through Oracle eDelivery and a developer download through OTN. Read the licence terms for each before using them outside evaluation.

Does an Enterprise subscription keep MySQL 8.0 patched?

No. MySQL 8.0 reached the end of Extended Support in April 2026 and is in Sustaining Support, which Oracle says includes no new fixes or critical patch updates. Patched 8.0 builds come from third parties such as Percona, OpenLogic and OSSeva, or from cloud providers' extended support on their own services.
