Who Provides Support for End-of-Life Elasticsearch 7.x and 8.x?

Randall McClure9 min read

The short answer

For Elasticsearch 8.x, Elastic still maintains the line until 15 January 2027 and supports it until 15 July 2027, so the answer today is Elastic and an upgrade plan for 9.x. For Elasticsearch 7.x, Elastic's support ended on 15 January 2026. Amazon OpenSearch Service still runs Elasticsearch up to 7.10 on its own service, with critical security fixes in a paid extended support phase that runs to 7 November 2030 for 7.10. For self-managed clusters, OSSeva publishes patched builds of Elasticsearch 7.10.2 and 7.17, and will backport to 8.19 after Elastic's maintenance ends. Perforce OpenLogic sells support for Elasticsearch and OpenSearch, and Aiven runs OpenSearch as a managed service.

The deciding question is licence as much as version. Elasticsearch 7.10.2 is the last release under Apache 2.0, so many 7.10 clusters are really choosing between a later Elastic licence and OpenSearch.

Where Elasticsearch support stands

Elastic maintains each major for the longer of 30 months from release or 18 months after the next major, covering the two newest minors of the current major and the final minor of the previous one. Support runs six months beyond maintenance.

LineEnd of maintenanceEnd of supportLicence
9.x15 October 2027, or 18 months after 10.0Six months after maintenanceElastic License, SSPL or AGPLv3
8.x, final minor 8.1915 January 202715 July 2027Elastic License or SSPL, with AGPLv3 from 8.16
7.1715 April 202515 January 2026Elastic License or SSPL
7.10.2 and earlier 7.xEndedEndedApache 2.0 for 7.10 and earlier

Elastic's licensing FAQ says the move to SSPL and the Elastic License came shortly before 7.11, and that AGPLv3 was added alongside them from 8.16. That is why 7.10.2 is still widely deployed and why OpenSearch was forked from it. The Elasticsearch end-of-life chart tracks every line, and Elasticsearch vulnerabilities by version lists what still reaches 7.x.

Elasticsearch support providers compared

Each row reflects what the provider publishes on its own site as of 6 October 2026.

ProviderWhat it coversElasticsearch versionsDelivery modelSelf-managed?
ElasticMaintenance and support for its own releases, under its published end-of-life policy9.x, and 8.x to 15 July 2027; 7.x support ended 15 January 2026Elastic subscription, self-managed or Elastic CloudYes

OSSevaBackported fixes for Elasticsearch and its bundled libraries and JDK; security review and a reindex and client plan on Assure; 24/7 operations and executed migrations to 8.x or OpenSearch on Operate7.10.2 and 7.17 now; 8.19 after Elastic's maintenance ends on 15 January 2027Signed packages and container images with SBOMsYes

The AWS row covers Elasticsearch only up to 7.10, the last Apache 2.0 version, and only on domains AWS runs. A self-managed 7.17 cluster has no route onto it without migrating, and the 7.10 domains move onto extended support charges once standard support ends in November 2027.

How the providers differ

Elastic

Elastic is the right answer for anyone on 8.x or 9.x, or able to get there. Its 8.x line is maintained to 15 January 2027 and supported to 15 July 2027, and 9.x to at least October 2027. Elastic's support for 7.x has ended, so a 7.17 cluster under an Elastic subscription is outside its support term until it upgrades. Elasticsearch 7.17 upgrade options and the 8 to 9 upgrade cover the steps.

Amazon OpenSearch Service

AWS is the longest-dated option for Elasticsearch 7.10, as long as the cluster runs on AWS. Version 7.10 is in standard support until 7 November 2027 and then in extended support, with critical security fixes, until 7 November 2030. Elasticsearch 7.1 to 7.8 are already in extended support, since November 2025. The service's own advice is to upgrade to a current OpenSearch version, and its extended support is charged automatically for domains on an older version.

Aiven and OpenLogic

Aiven runs OpenSearch as a managed service and calls it the open source continuation of its original Elasticsearch service, so it is a migration target rather than support for an Elasticsearch cluster. OpenLogic lists Elasticsearch, OpenSearch and OpenSearch Dashboards at all three support levels, which suits a team that wants help running either one under a broad contract. Neither publishes patched Elasticsearch builds. See OSSeva vs OpenLogic and, for managed OpenSearch, OSSeva vs Instaclustr.

OSSeva

OSSeva for Elasticsearch patches self-managed 7.10.2 and 7.17 in place, so indices, mappings and clients stay as they are while the reindex to 8.x or the move to OpenSearch is planned. Patch delivers backported fixes for Elasticsearch, its bundled libraries and its bundled JDK, as signed packages and images with SBOMs. Assure adds a security and network exposure review, a reindex and client plan for 8.x or OpenSearch, and a SOC 2 and PCI DSS evidence pack. Operate adds 24/7 cluster health monitoring, a 15-minute P1 response and executed migrations, and patches Critical CVEs (CVSS 9.0 and above) within 48 hours and High within 7 days. Pricing is per cluster.

How to choose

SituationUsual answer
On 8.x and able to move to 9.x by mid-2027Elastic, and plan the 9.x upgrade
On Elasticsearch 7.10 in Amazon OpenSearch ServiceStay on AWS standard support to November 2027, and migrate to OpenSearch
Self-managed 7.10.2 because of the Apache 2.0 licenceMove to OpenSearch, with OSSeva patched 7.10.2 builds until the move is done
Self-managed 7.17 with indices from 6.x or clients not ready for 8.xOSSeva patched 7.17 builds while the reindex and client changes are done
Want a managed search service insteadElastic Cloud, Amazon OpenSearch Service or Aiven for OpenSearch
Need help running Elasticsearch or OpenSearch more than patchesOpenLogic, or OSSeva Operate

Elasticsearch 7.10.2 inside a product covers the case where the cluster ships inside software you sell, and Elasticsearch 7 extended support covers self-managed 7.x in more detail.

Where OSSeva fits

OSSeva covers self-managed Elasticsearch 7.10.2 and 7.17 now and 8.19 from January 2027, with a planned route to 9.x or OpenSearch. See the extended support vendor roundup for how OSSeva compares across other technologies.

Frequently asked questions

Which companies offer Elasticsearch support besides the original vendor?

Perforce OpenLogic sells Elasticsearch and OpenSearch support, AWS runs Elasticsearch up to 7.10 on Amazon OpenSearch Service, and OSSeva ships patched builds of self-managed Elasticsearch 7.10.2 and 7.17. Aiven runs OpenSearch, the fork of Elasticsearch 7.10.2.

Who offers Elasticsearch extended lifecycle support?

AWS, for Elasticsearch up to 7.10 on Amazon OpenSearch Service, with critical security fixes to 7 November 2030 for 7.10. OSSeva, for self-managed 7.10.2 and 7.17, and for 8.19 after 15 January 2027.

Is there commercial support for Elasticsearch 7.10.2 after end of life?

Yes. On AWS, Amazon OpenSearch Service supports Elasticsearch 7.10 in standard support to 7 November 2027 and extended support to 7 November 2030. For self-managed clusters, OSSeva ships patched 7.10.2 builds. Elastic's own support for 7.x ended on 15 January 2026.

Who provides security patches for Elasticsearch 7.10.2?

AWS, for 7.10 domains on Amazon OpenSearch Service, and OSSeva, for self-managed 7.10.2 clusters and products that embed it. Elastic no longer ships 7.x releases.

Best alternatives for elasticsearch end of life support

Upgrading to 8.x and then 9.x keeps you on Elastic's support. Migrating to OpenSearch, self-managed or on AWS or Aiven, keeps an open source licence. Patched 7.x builds from OSSeva buy time for either move.

Who can help migrate Elasticsearch 7 to OpenSearch?

AWS documents upgrades from legacy Elasticsearch domains to OpenSearch on its own service. OpenLogic supports both Elasticsearch and OpenSearch. OSSeva's Assure tier includes a reindex and client plan for OpenSearch, and Operate executes the migration.
