EDB Alternative: OSSeva vs. EDB

EDB sells its own Postgres distributions, including the Oracle-compatible EDB Postgres Advanced Server, plus support for community PostgreSQL 14 to 18. OSSeva supports the community PostgreSQL you already run, ships patched builds of 11, 12 and 13 now and 14 after 12 November 2026, and covers MySQL, Redis, Valkey, Kafka and RabbitMQ under the same contract.

Where OSSeva is stronger

  • ✓Patched community PostgreSQL 11, 12 and 13 today, and 14 from 12 November 2026. EDB's compatibility page lists nothing older than 14
  • ✓Support for the community binaries you run today, with no change of distribution
  • ✓MySQL, Redis, Valkey, Kafka, RabbitMQ and MongoDB on the same contract and renewal date
  • ✓Priced per cluster, so adding cores or nodes does not change the basis of the quote

Where EDB (EnterpriseDB) is stronger

  • →Oracle compatibility in EDB Postgres Advanced Server: SPL, packages, Oracle-style data types and catalog views, EDB*Plus and EDB*Loader
  • →Its own Postgres distributions and tooling, including Postgres Distributed and the Hybrid Manager control plane
  • →A managed cloud service as well as support for self-managed servers
  • →Analytics products on the same Postgres platform, such as WarehousePG

Why teams choose OSSeva

The PostgreSQL versions EDB no longer lists

EDB's product compatibility page starts at PostgreSQL and Advanced Server 14, with standard support for 14 ending on 1 December 2026. Its cloud documentation mentions Extended Life Support, bought through EDB sales, without describing what it covers. OSSeva backports security and data-corruption fixes into PostgreSQL 11, 12 and 13 today and into 14 from its community end-of-life date, shipped as signed DEB and RPM packages, tarballs and container images.

Keep your binaries, change your support

OSSeva takes over support for the community PostgreSQL servers you run now, on the data directories you already have. A patched build installs like a minor release: replicas first, switch over, then the former primary. Nothing in your applications has to change to get a support contract.

One contract beyond Postgres

Most Postgres estates sit next to MySQL, Redis or Valkey, Kafka and RabbitMQ, each with its own support arrangement. OSSeva covers them under one contract, one renewal date and one escalation path, priced per cluster rather than per core.

Why teams choose EDB (EnterpriseDB)

Oracle compatibility in Advanced Server

EDB says Advanced Server makes Postgres look, feel and operate more like Oracle, so less code needs rewriting on migration. Its documentation lists SPL stored procedures, packages and built-in packages, Oracle-compatible data types, SQL and catalog views, and tools such as EDB*Plus, EDB*Loader and an Open Client Library for OCI applications. If your plan is to move PL/SQL code with as few changes as possible, this is EDB's clearest advantage and OSSeva has no equivalent.

A full Postgres product line

EDB builds Advanced Server, Postgres Extended and Postgres Distributed, offers a managed cloud service, and sells Hybrid Manager as a control plane for Postgres on premises, in the cloud and on Kubernetes. Teams that want one vendor for the database software as well as the support get that from EDB.

Current versions with long standard windows

EDB publishes standard support dates for PostgreSQL and Advanced Server 14 to 18, reaching 25 November 2030 for 18. For an estate that already runs current versions and plans to keep upgrading, those dates cover the next several years.

Which is right for your situation?

Choose OSSeva when…

You run community PostgreSQL, including 11 to 14 past end of life, and want patched builds without changing distribution, or you want MySQL, Redis, Valkey, Kafka and RabbitMQ covered by the same contract.

Talk to an engineer

Consider EDB (EnterpriseDB) when…

You are moving Oracle PL/SQL code and want Advanced Server's compatibility layer, you need multi-region Postgres Distributed, or you want a managed Postgres service from the company that builds the distribution.

EDB builds and supports Advanced Server, Postgres Extended, Postgres Distributed and community PostgreSQL 14 to 18. OSSeva supports community PostgreSQL 11 to 18, including 11 to 14 past end of life, together with MySQL, Redis, Valkey, Kafka, RabbitMQ and MongoDB.

Frequently asked questions

What are the EDB Postgres supported versions?

EDB's product compatibility page lists standard support end dates for Advanced Server 14 (1 December 2026), 15 (13 February 2028), 16 (9 November 2028), 17 (21 November 2029) and 18 (25 November 2030). For community PostgreSQL it lists 14 to 18 with similar dates, 15 ending on 28 November 2027. Nothing older than 14 is listed.

Does EDB support PostgreSQL 12 or 13?

Neither version appears on EDB's compatibility page. Its cloud documentation refers to Extended Life Support, bought through EDB sales before a version is retired, but does not describe what it includes. If you need fixes for 12 or 13, ask EDB in writing. OSSeva ships patched 11, 12 and 13 builds now.

Is EDB Postgres Advanced Server the same as PostgreSQL?

It is built on PostgreSQL and adds Oracle compatibility features such as SPL, packages, Oracle-style catalog views and EDB*Plus. Code that uses those features will not run unchanged on community PostgreSQL, which is why EDB is the better fit for teams that depend on them.

Can OSSeva support EDB Postgres Advanced Server?

No. OSSeva supports community PostgreSQL. If you run Advanced Server for its Oracle features, stay with EDB for that estate. If you run community PostgreSQL under an EDB plan, OSSeva can take over support with no migration.

Can we use EDB and OSSeva together?

Yes. A common split keeps EDB on the Advanced Server clusters that carry migrated Oracle code and uses OSSeva for community PostgreSQL, especially versions past end of life, and for the MySQL, Redis, Kafka and RabbitMQ estate around them.

How does pricing compare?

We do not publish or estimate other vendors' prices. EDB's cloud documentation meters its service per vCPU, and its support plans are quoted. OSSeva prices PostgreSQL per cluster. Book a discovery call for a quote and compare both against the same list of clusters and versions.
